Shale Shaker Mud Loss: 5 Causes & Solutions for Derrick® & Brandt® | Yuanpeng

On a solids control site, the cost of drilling fluid accounts for a significant portion of total expenditures. If your Derrick® or Brandt® shale shakers begin to "run mud"—meaning the drilling fluid flows directly into the cuttings discharge chute without being screened—this not only signifies a waste of materials but also foreshadows excessive wear and tear on downstream equipment, such as desanders and desilters.

Drawing upon 20 years of B2B experience in solids control, Yuanpeng has compiled a summary of the five most common causes of this issue in 2026, along with their corresponding optimization solutions.

Ⅰ. The screen mesh size does not match the D100 cut point.

This is the most common cause of mud loss. Many operators select screen mesh sizes based solely on experience, overlooking the variations in mud viscosity associated with different geological formations.

According to API RP 13C standards, relying solely on mesh count is now considered outdated. If the selected D100 cut point is too fine, the fluid conductance becomes insufficient, preventing the mud from passing through the screen surface in a timely manner.

Yuanpeng Solution: The Derrick® FLC 2000 screens manufactured by Yuanpeng feature high fluid conductance. While maintaining precise cut points, they optimize the open area ratio, enabling the effective processing of high-flow-rate muds.

        Ⅱ. Screen Blinding

When the diameter of fine particles in the drilling fluid approximates the mesh aperture size, these particles can become lodged within the pores, forming a "barrier." This phenomenon—particularly prevalent in Oil-Based Mud operations—renders standard wire mesh highly susceptible to blinding caused by surface tension.

Yuanpeng Solution: Utilize SS316L material, which offers superior surface flatness, or switch to Composite Frame screens. The composite frame maintains consistent and uniform tension over time, thereby minimizing particle retention.

Ⅲ. Seal Failure and Bypass Leakage

If you observe drilling fluid leaking from the edges or tensioning points of the screen, it is highly probable that there is an issue with the sealing system.

The Brandt® VSM 300 and similar models rely on the compressive force between the sealing strips and the wedges to maintain a seal. If the screen frame dimensions deviate by even a few millimeters, the seal will fail.

Yuanpeng Solution: We provide precision-engineered screens that offer a perfect 1:1 fit with the original equipment. Manufactured using a precision injection molding process, Yuanpeng’s replacement screens ensure a flawless fit with the mounting assemblies of models such as the Brandt® King Cobra.

Ⅳ. Insufficient Excitation Force (G-force) or Nonlinear Vibration

The mechanical power of a shaker screen determines the trajectory of the particles' bounce.

If the excitation force falls below 6G, the slurry layer within the Derrick® screen box becomes excessively thick; consequently, the liquid slides off the screen deck before it has sufficient time to pass through the mesh.

Solution: Maintain the motors and ensure that the vibrations on both the left and right sides are synchronized. Additionally, utilize composite-frame screens, which are lighter in weight and transmit shaker screens more directly.

Ⅴ. Liquid conductance is too low.

Even if the mesh count is correct, liquid flow will remain impeded if the woven structure of the screen is poorly designed.

Data Comparison: To cut costs, inferior screens often utilize wires that are excessively thick, thereby occupying an undue proportion of the effective filtration area.

Solution:The high-conductivity mesh surface developed by Yuanpeng maximizes the physical channels available for liquid passage, all without compromising structural integrity.

        Conclusion

Resolving the issue of "mud loss" is by no means as simple as merely replacing a single screen panel; rather, it hinges upon precise matching and systemic synergy. Whether you are facing the high-G force challenges inherent to the Brandt® and Derrick® series of shale shakers, selecting a solution that offers superior fluid-handling capabilities and adheres to industry standards constitutes the critical first step toward achieving substantial cost reductions.
